Lot Essay

Gebhard Lebrecht von Blücher, known as 'Marshal Forward', was born in Rostock, Mecklenburg. When the Prussians rose against France in 1813, Blücher took command in Silesia and displayed immense courage. In January 1814 he crossed the Rhine and although routed by Napoleon won several important battles and on 31st March entered Paris. After Napoleon's return in 1815, Blücher assumed the general command and completed Wellington's victory at the battle of Waterloo by his timely appearance on the field.
Gerhard Johann David von Scharnhorst was the son of a Hanoverian farmer. He fought in Flanders against the French 1793-1795, was wounded at Auerstädt and taken prisoner at Lübeck. He was present at Eylau and from 1807 reorganized the Prussian army and introduced the short service system and restored morale so that the army defeated Napoleon at Leipzig in 1813. He died from wounds received at Grossgörschen.
At the Berlin Academy exhibition of 1816, de Baux exhibited, as no. 145, a miniature depicting Blücher.
