Lot Essay

Stanley Baldwin was born in Bewdley, Worcestershire, in 1847 and studied at Harrow and Cambridge. In 1908 he succeeded his father as MP for Bewdley, becoming a junior minister in the treasury in 1917 and joining the cabinet in 1921.

In 1923 illness forced Bonar Law to retire as Prime Minister leaving King George V to choose Baldwin over George Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston to succeed him as Prime Minister. Baldwin variously served as Prime Minister through the many difficulties of the 1920's and 1930's including a general strike and the abdictation of King Edward VIII on 10 December 1936, retiring and being created 1st Earl Balwin of Bewdley in 1937.
