A MEISSEN GILT-METAL-MOUNTED CHINOISERIE PIPE-BOWL
CIRCA 1735-40
Of U-shaped form with a slightly bombé cylindrical bowl connected to a stem of flattened oval section, the lower edge moulded with a gilt stem issuing scrolling incised gilt-edged foliage at the front, the sides painted in the manner of J.G. Höroldt with vignettes of Orientals at discussion and holding fans, a pipe and a lady stirring the contents of a steaming vessel, with insects in flight above, the top of the stem mounted with a gilt-metal collar, the top of the bowl mounted with a hinged pierced domed cover (one side with chip to surface of stem, other side with slight branching crack from rim of bowl, slight wear to gilding)
