BULLEIN, William (d. 1576). Bulleins bulwarks of defence against all sicknesse, soarenesse, and woundes... Gathered and practised from the most worthy, learned, both olde and new. London: Thomas Marshe, 1579.
4 parts in one volume, 2o (280 x 195 mm). Woodcut title border (McKerrow & Ferguson 98) and woodcuts in text. Additional leaf f3 included. (Inner margins reinforced on first two leaves, [par.]2-3 misbound and with margins renewed, 3B1r misprinted at foot with loss of signature and some words in text, some occasional browning and spotting.) Contemporary blind-tooled panelled calf, metal clasps with new leather, later red morocco spine label (rebacked preserving original spine); cloth folding case.
Third edition. "The treatise is divided into four parts: 1) Book of simples, 2) Dialogue between soreness and chyrirgi, 3) Booke of Compounds, 4) Booke of the use of sicke men and medicens... There is a full-length woodcut portrait, presumably of the author, on aaa1r. The Booke of simples is of considerable interest, as being one of the earliest of English herbals. Bullein travelled much and made minute observations wherevere he went; but his descriptions of what he observed are more valuable than his explanations" (DNB).
