Broadsheets (720 x 540 mm). 15 finely hand-colored engraved plates, the first two after Agostino Costa and Carlo Lasinio, by Antonio Serantoni, the remaining after and by Serantoni (some occasional pale spotting, offsetting on the second). (Corner of title renewed, repaired tear on final text leaf, some pale dampstaining.) Modern green morocco gilt.

FIRST EDITION of this very scarce posthumous work by Mascagni, published the year after his death and containing 14 very fine anatomical plates for the use of artistic rendering. The present is one of three works left upon Mascagni's death which were quickly undertaken for publication by the surviving family. It was edited by his brother, Bernardo, and grandson, Aurelio. The first two plates represent the front and back views of the skeleton with the ligaments. The remaining plates represent front and back views of a muscle-man, and separate parts of the body. The muscles are engraved in a red chalk manner and then colored by hand. Choulant-Frank, pp.315-20; Waller 6292; Wellcome IV, p.73.
