Lot Essay
The 'Apollo' laurel-wreathed and palm-enriched chairs, centred by Palmyreen sunflowered paterae, reflect the French styled 'cabriolet' form described as 'Modern' and 'now in use' in Thomas Malton's Compleat Treatise on Perspective, 1775 (pl. 33 (XXXIII)). The backs' rayed and fretted foliage featured on so-called 'Star back' chairs that were japanned in green and white en suite with Indian chintz upholstery and supplied in 1774 for Paxton House, Berwickshire by Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779) (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, 1978, p. 271, fig. 164). Armchairs of similar form were also supplied in the 1770s for Dyrham Park, Gloucestershire (A. Mitchell, Dyrham Park, London, 1995, p.14).
