Lot Essay

This table is unusual in having blind-fretwork frieze decoration on only one long side and the two short sides. The reverse frieze remains blank. It is possible that it was originally designed to display something and to stand at the side of a room.

A similarly fretted 'tray top' features on a 1786 'tea table' pattern in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Books (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 73).
