ROTHSCHILD, Nathaniel Meyer Victor, Baron (1910-1990) -- N.M. SHAWYER. The Rothschild Library. A Catalogue of the Collection of Eighteenth-Century Printed Books and Manuscripts formed by Lord Rothschild. Cambridge: Privately Printed at the University Press, 1954.
2 volumes, tall 8o (259 x 172 mm). Plates. Original two-toned cloth.
According to Rothschild's foreword, preliminary work on his superlative catalogue was done by Miss K.M. Flack before World War II but the main credit is due to Miss N.M. Shawyer who worked on it for six years with assistance from John Hayward. Rothschild started his collection in 1932 while an undergraduate at Cambridge. Rothschild sent proposals for his catalogue to 19 bibliographers and experts, including Frederick B. Adams, John Carter, Sir Walter Greg, John Hayward, W.A. Jackson, Geoffrey Keynes, A.N.L. Munby, F.A. Pottle, George Rylands and C.B. Tinker. Their input and suggestions helped produce one of the finest private library catalogues ever published. (2)
