Large 8o (244 x 181 mm). Portrait frontispiece after a painting by D. Jagger, 7 plates. Original red morocco gilt, monogram of the collector gilt on sides, edges gilt (spine very slightly faded); cloth slipcase. Provenance: John Hayward's copy (correspondence laid in; see below).

JOHN HAYWARD'S OWN COPY, one of a few specially bound copies for presentation. The American born industrialist and philanthropist, Sir Louis Sterling presented his collection to the University of London, the city where he spent his adult life making a fortune in the gramophone business. Loosely inserted are letters to Hayward from J.P. Pafford, Librarian of the University of London congratulting him on the catalogue, and from Philip Robinson explaining the delay in the binding of the special copies; printed compliments slip from Sir Louis; typed list of 2 additions to the library not in the catalogue; obituary of Sir Louis Sterling cut from The Times, London, 3 June, 1958.
