PRICED WITH BUYERS' NAMES in a contemporary hand, ruled in red. Books and manucripts from the library of Thomas Gray. The entire library had been offered in a sale by Evans as lots 492-853 in November 1845. The above sale contains some of the most important items acquired at that sale and possibly from other sources, including Gray's copy of Linnaeus, with notes and drawings by Gray, subsequently acquired by John Ruskin. The most important lot was No. 53, eight volumes of Gray's manuscripts, including an early autograph manuscript of his "Elegy wrote in a Country Church-Yard," correspondence, notes, &c.; it realized £500 but a note in the same hand states "This lot not Sold." Both the relevant pages of the Evans catalogue of 1845 and the above catalogue are reproduced in facsimile in "Poets and Men of Letters," ed. A.N.L. Munby, 1971.
