CANGÉ DE BILLY, Jean-Pierre Imbert Châtre de (d.1746) -- Catalogue des livres du cabinet de M. de Cangé, acheté par le Roy au mois de Juillet 1733. Paris: [Jacques Guérin], 1733.

12o (163 x 95 mm). Contemporary Parisian burgundy morocco, triple gilt fillets round sides, smooth spine gilt à la grotesque, green morocco lettering piece, marbled endpapers, edges gilt.

Second issue of the inventory catalogue of the extremely valuable library of Cangé, "Premier Valet de Chambre du Roi," first issued by Guérin without mention of the owner's name on the title, as an offer for sale en bloc. The library was acquired for 40,000 livres by the Bibliothéque Royale, which reissued the catalogue with a new title-page (as here), augmented by a 12-page "Ordre des Divisions," and at end, a two-page list of eighteen additional manuscripts which Cangé had presented to the Library. This copy contains the two-page "Avertissement" of the (anonymous) owner's intention to preserve his library as a whole, discarded in most surviving copies. It consisted of some 7,000 volumes, including 158 manuscripts, and was especially rich in early French literature. Bléchet, p. 87, indicates that the eminent French collector, Gros de Boze was the "rédacteur," i.e. compiler of the catalogue, most likely on the strength of a note in one of the copies in the Bibliothèque Nationale (all of which are incomplete). Blogie II, col. 3; Brunet I:1643; Delisle, I:411; Graesse II, p.69; North 36; Pollard & Ehrman 273 (first issues).
