Geissel, Bishop of Speyer, and, from 1845, Cardinal-Archbishop of Cologne, was one of the most influential German Catholic churchman of his time. He was also a poet and story writer: the catalogue gives the bibliography of forty-one of his writings. Under him Cologne Cathedral was completed. This is an early example of an auctioneer selling books from various sources under a famous name: the title page mentions six other provenances, such as Dr. Longard, Coblenz, and Pastor Peters, Mündt. The most important item was the manuscript of the Chronicle of the Benedictine Abbey at Deutz by Theodoricus Edituus; the frontispiece reproduces the portrait of St. Heribert. Blogie V, col. 57 (lacking Pt. IV).
