WEIGEL, Theodor Oswald (1812-1881) -- Katalog frühester Erzeugnisse der Druckerkunst der T.O. Weigel'schen Sammlung. Leipzig: Weigel, 27 May 1872.
8o (225 x 153 mm). Contemporary marbled boards, modern black morocco spine and corners, original wrappers bound in. Provenance: Purchased from H. Domizlaff who had bought it from the J. Rosenthal reference library.
Priced copy of the sale catalogue of the extraordinary collection of pre-1500 metalcut and woodblock prints, block-books, and incunabula formed by the bookseller/collector Weigel, which realized 81,992 Taler (it must have been one of the last sales in that currency, as the Mark had been introduced in 1871). The collection consisted of 508 specimens of 15th-century graphic art, many unique, and 25 selected incunabula and early illustrated books. Weigel personally dispersed the collection by auction, after repeated attempts to sell it en bloc to a German museum failed. Blogie V, col. 64.
