Lot Essay

Several generations of the later Yamato Tegai school smiths, associated with the Todaiji temple in Nara (Nanto, the "Southern Capital") signed "Kanesada" from the Nambokucho period onwards. This blade is evidently of the late Muromachi period. Homma Junji lists a smith signing "Nanto ju" in the Eisho era (1504-21), and another, possibly by this smith, who was active around the Tensho era (1573-92).
