Lot Essay

Korenobu was born in Musashi Province and was a son and pupil of Kano Sukenobu (Eisen'in) (1730-1790). He became the sixth-generation head of the Kobikicho Kano family, serving the shogunate as official painter. He was given the titles of Hogen in 1781 and Hoin in 1794, at which time he took the name Yosen'in.

The Tsurezuregusa was written sometime between 1330 and 1332 by the Buddhist priest Kenko. The themes he treats in his random jottings are suffused with an acceptance of Buddhist beliefs.
