"ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS IN AMERICAN COLONIAL HISTORY" -- Lawrence Wroth

THE RARE QUARTO FIRST EDITION, INCLUDING THE FIRST PUBLICATION OF GEORGE WASHINGTON'S OHIO JOURNAL. This book is one of the critical documents from the French and Indian War, outlining the French position on the war on the Ohio. Virginia troops under George Washington and French troops under Jumonville clashed in the Ohio County, the result of which was Jumonville's capture and slaying by Washington's Indian allies while in captivity. The French later surrounded Washington at Fort Necessity, forced his surrender and seized his journals, Braddock's letter of instruction and Braddock's letters to the British ministry. Using these documents, the French here build a case against Washington, claiming that he had murdered Jumonville.

Washington's journal kept during the expedition to fortify the Forks of the Ohio 1754 here is published for the first time (in translation), and suggests that Jumonville approached Washington on a peaceful mission but that Washington distrusted him and ordered his party fired upon. Also of note in the Mémoire is the French assertion of their rights to the region west of the Alleghenies. Numerous duodecimo reprints were soon issued, as well as translations into English. Howes M-787; Sabin 47511; Streeter II:1013.
