A fine and complete 19th-Century English compound binocular microscope,
signed on the foot R. & J. Beck 31. Cornhill London, No. 4853, the eyepieces with rack and pinion adjustment, the body-tubes with rack and pinion focusing, micrometer fine adjustment and prism drawer with prism, held on a curved limb with apertures for accessories and screw clamps, over a mechanical stage with condensor mount beneath adjusted by rack and pinion and plano-concave substage mirror, raised on the Beck large first-class stand comprising two brass columns from a Y-shaped foot, with separate graduated draw-tube, table-standing bull's-eye condensor and a mahogany accessory case with two brass hooks and eyes containing R. & J. Beck 1/8, 1/5, 2/10, 2/3 and 1½in. objectives in signed and labelled canisters, four eyepieces (two further stored on the instrument), small, medium and large lieberkuhns, three dark wells with holder and circular mount, an erecting glass, brass-mounted stage and eyepiece micrometer slides, double nosepiece attachment, stage forceps, tweezers, achromatic and Wenham's parabolic substage condensors, a small mahogany box of mica discs, three polarizers, Wollaston's camera lucida, limb-mounted bull's-eye condensor, glass slider with shallow well, five further rectangles of glass, two thick, one with micrometer scale, another with central dot, a brass Wenham's compressor slider, small and large live-boxes, a glass tube and a Maltwood's finder glass slide with central photo micrometer scale (slide split and repaired at each end) and engraved Photographed by Smith, Beck & Beck 31 Cornhill London in a leatherette slip case gilt-stamped with an R. & J. Beck logo, together with a 60pp Illustrated Catalogue OF MICROSCOPES, OBJECT-GLASSES AND APPARATUS MANUFACTURED BY R. & J. BECK LIMITED (1894) bound in blue leatherette-covered boards with gilt-stamped cover, all contained in a mahogany case with brass carrying handle and key -- 49.2cm. (19 3/8in.) high
