OGILBY, John. Africa: being an Accurate Description of the Regions of Aegypt, Barbary, Libya ..., London: T. Johnson for the Author, 1670. 2° (424 x 267mm). Title printed in red and black, additional engraved title, general folding map, 11 double-page sectional maps only (of 15), 28 double-page plates only (of 29), 9 single-page plates and numerous engraved illustrations in the text (several maps and plates torn, one plate shaved with slight loss of engraved area, lower fore-corners at the end rotted by damp but with no loss, some browning and soiling). Contemporary (?original) mottled calf, gilt spine (worn, upper cover detached). Provenance: A. C. Sillifant (bookplate); Earl of Egremont (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of a book with a difficult collation. According to the list of plates this copy lacks the plate of the Caravan and the plate of the City of Lovango. But a recently sold copy with a presentation to the Earl of Bridgewater had a total of 54 plates and maps, i.e. three more than is called for in the list of plates. Therefore, owing to the difficulty of collation, the book is sold not subject to return.
