Lot Essay

Castlegar was the grandest of the architect, Sir Richard Morrison's villas, built from 1803 onwards for Sir Ross Mahon, 1st Bt. Although Gillows supplied twelve cases of furniture in 1809, it more likely that these bookcases were supplied by Henry Eggleso of 12 Abbey Street, Dublin whose bill amounted to £171 12s 6d. The house underwent Victorian alterations in 1896 which is possibly when the present pair of bookcases was adapted. The remaining contents of Castlegar were sold Christie's house sale, 24-25 May 1988, however these bookcases were not in the sale.
