Lot Essay

Vittorio Emanuele II (1820-1878), son of Carlo Alberto of Savoy-Carrignan, was King of Sardinia 1849-1861 and the first King of freshly united Italy 1861-1878. He married Maria Adelaide di Aburgo-Lorena (1822-1855) in 1842 and had issue.
A signed miniature of the King by Luigi Gandolphi (1810-1869) set on the cover of a gold presentation snuff-box by Musy, Turin was sold in these rooms, 25 May 2004, lot 217. Another miniature of the King by Gandolphi is illustrated on the front cover of the exhibition catalogue Miniature Sabaude, Turin, Unione Industriale Turino, 1996.
