Lot Essay

Maria Margherita was the daughter of Carlo Emanuele I (Il Grande), Duke of Savoy, and in 1608 married Francesco IV Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua (1586-1612), who ruled Mantua very briefly in 1612. There is a painting of her as Duchess by Frans Pourbus II in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg (inv. No. 6957).
