Lot Essay

In 1951, Dalí began to work on a planned commemorative print series honoring the Italian poet Dante Alighiere and his masterpiece The Divine Comedy. The final series consisted of 100 prints (one print for each canto) as well as one cover print. The prints were commissioned by Joseph Foret and were executed in Paris from 1959 to 1963 as wood engravings. The Followers of Simon was executed as a maquette for the print.
