SETTLE, Elkanah (1648-1724). Fears and Dangers, fairly display'd: being a new memorial of the church of England. London: for the author, 1706. 4° (210 x 155mm), A4 a cancel (light marginal browning on first and last leaves), a LONDON BINDING BY ELKANAH SETTLE'S BINDER, contemporary dark olive turkey gilt, panelled sides with Westmoreland arms at centre (a little rubbed, mostly at edges). Provenance: Thomas, 6th Earl of Westmoreland (d. 1736) and by descent (binding; Westmoreland booklabel dated 1856).
Two editions were printed in 1706, the present, presumably the first, privately printed for the author, and another printed and sold by A. Baldwin. Playwright, poet of the city of London from 1691, and political activist, Settle wrote this work to celebrate the return of a whig majority to Parliament. On Settle's binder, see Hobson, Abbey, 70-72; Nixon, ive Centuries, 57; Foot, Davis Gift, 153.
