Lot Essay

The present composition is based on Titian's Portrait of Paul III without Cap (Naples, Museo di Capodimonte - fig. 1). However, the pope is wearing the camauro, as in Paul III with Cap (also in Naples, Museo di Capodimonte - fig. 2).
