Cader Idris and the surrounding villages of North Wales were one of David Cox's favourite subjects, which he painted on numerous occasions. Bettws-y-Coed in Snowdonia was Cox's base from which he made numerous Welsh tours from 1844 until his death. He exhibited eight views of Cader Idris at the Old Water-colour Society and this composition was also engraved by W. Radclyffe.
