FORSTER, Edward Morgan (1879-1970). Autograph letter signed to Sir Michael [Sadler], 27 Brunswick Square [London], 15 June 1925, 2 pages, 8vo.

Written while reviewing a book about the Ajanta caves which does not mention the conservation of them which he believes that the Hyderabad Gov[ernmen]t executed at the instigation of Mr Hydari. 'The implication indeed is that the Hyderabad Gov[ernmen]t being Moslem is indifferent to the fate of Buddhist masterpieces'.

Forster writes a year after the publication of A Passage to India, with the famous and mysterious scene at the 'Marabar' caves, inspired by his visit to the caves at Barabar by train from Patna in 1913, during his first visit to India at the invitation of his Oxford-educated friend, Sayed Ross Masood. The Barabar are among the oldest Buddhist monuments in existence. This visit inspired his first draft of the 'Marabar' scene, to be completed in its final form eleven years later. Sir Ali Akbar Hydari, who held a high position in the civil service of the Nizam of Hyderabad, was a friend of the Masood family. Forster's interest in the preservation of the Buddhist monuments in the caves at Ajanta was one of the consequences of his earlier visit to Barabar.

Sir Michael Sadler (1861-1943), well known for his patronage of the arts, was also an educational pioneer who visited India in 1917 and played an important role in the revolution in Indian education. From 1923 he was Master of University College, Oxford.
