Faraday gives his detailed opinion on 'the principle that the same bulk of a gas is abstracted by water whatever be its previous density from extraneous pressure', offering his theories by using ammonia rather than water; written in a period when he was engrossed in his research into electricity, to such an extent that it precipitated his illness the following year.
