Lot Essay

George Turner was born in Cromford, Derbyshire and worked in the surrounding areas - Barrow-on-Trent, Idringehay and Birmingham - all his life.

The cottage depicted by Turner still exists. In Turner's picture it represents the ideal rural dwelling. It is now known as 'The Old Cottage' and appears remarkably unchanged, though traffic passes where once a shepherd guided his flock.
