This river scene may well be a view of Wharfdale in the Yorkshire Dales. The scenery of the area is dominated by the Great Scar Limestone of the Craven Pennines, and throughout the valley, as the present painting shows, white scars of rock mark the dramatic hillside. This may well be the spectacular outcrop Kilnsey Crag, looming above the winding River Wharfe as it winds down from its source on Cam Fell.

The painting technique concurs with the last phase of Grimshaw's Pre-Raphaelite period before he adopted a more amorphous style.
