Lot Essay

This roundel depicts Santiago at the battle of Clavijo (circa 930 A.D.). The battle against the Saracens had been going badly for the Spanish under King Ramirez of Castile; according to legend, the night before the battle, James had been promised victory in a dream. On the day of the battle, the saint appeared on the field on a white charger and led the rout of the Moorish army.
