Lot Essay

The scene on the present roundel has two possible sources, the Assumption of the Magdalen or Mary of Egypt. In the first Magdalen spends thirty years in fasting and penance in the mountains at Sainte-Baume. Seven times each day angels would lift her toward heaven to offer a glimps of the bliss to come. On one such occassion a hermit witnesses the ascension and reported what he had seen on his return to Marseilles. The second story relates to Mary of Egypt who is thought to have lived in Alexandria in the 5th century. After her conversion in the church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem, she returned to the desert. The hermit, Zosimus is believed to have witnessed her being borne across the Jordan by angels.
