Lot Essay

This work is sold with a photo-certificate from Maya Widmaier-Picasso dated Paris le 2 Avril 2005.

Please see note to lot 302, the drawing dated Dimanche 25.10.70.III 24, which immediately preceded this page in the sketchbook. Picasso has employed in the present drawing a pose for the left-hand nude basically similar to the girl's posture seen in the earlier work, and repeated his reference to the Ingresque "three-armed" woman. The presence of the second girl removes the need for the background detail seen in the earlier sheet. Picasso was especially adept at multiple figure compositions, effortlessly dovetailing one body into the next within a readable spatial context, a skill that he admired and studied in Ingres' Le bain turc.
