A mid/late 17th-Century French ivory magnetic azimuth diptych,
signed on the calendar volvelle Jacques Senecal Dieppe fecit, with black colouring, double-lined borders with typical Dieppe "pecked" ornamentation, two pewter-brass scythe clasps and pewter-brass clasp on the left side to hold the pin gnomon (missing) -- 5.1 x 5.6cm. (2 x 2¼in.)
Face Ia, upper leaf, outer face - a circular equinoctial dial labeled 1-12 twice, central polar dial labeled 8-12-4 twice and a central metal rivet with hole for the pin gnomon;
Face Ib, upper leaf, inner face - outer scale labeled for 1-12 twice and pewter-brass volvelle graduated 1-30, with latitude scale along the right side from 0-80°;
Face IIa, lower leaf, inner face - single hour scale labeled 5-12-7, the glazed (replacement) compass bowl with brass-pewter elliptical scale for the magnetic azimuth dial labeled 12-5-7 on gazeteer with latitude and attributes of a number cities (mostly French) and needle (detached), (a crack to ivory, top centre);
Flat IIb, lower leaf, outer face - a small hand engraved on the ivory pointing to a pewter-brass volvelle (detached) with perpetual calendar and calendar scale
