DU BOIS, Henry Pène. Historical essay on the art of bookbinding. New York: Bradstreet Press, 1883.
8o (202 x 139 mm). CHINA-PAPER ISSUE. Jansenist binding by Bradstreet's: light-blue morocco, gilt lettering on spine, red morocco doublures, straight dentelle of pointillé floral tooling in gilt, flower tool in the corners on blue oval onlays, roll-tooled borders on pale silk free endleaves, top-edges gilt, others uncut, original printed wrappers preserved. Provenance: extra-illustrated with 8 plates (portraits of collectors, caricatures of bibliomania, Lalauze's frontispiece to Octave Uzanne's Caprices d'un bibliophile).
EXTREMELY RARE ON SPECIAL PAPER. Although exceedingly concise, Pène du Bois' esssay is the first general history of bookbinding by an American writer. Bradstreet's employed a binder, who might be rated the best in America, but nothing seems to be known about him. He produced some wonderful early art nouveau designs (see Breslauer sale, First Portion, lots 107 and 112). The history of this period of American bookbinding still awaits scholarly treatment.
