Lot Essay

With its elegant amphora-shaped stem, this chandelier relates to a drawing attributed to the celebrated bronzier Antoine-André Ravrio (d. 1814, maître foundeur in 1777), in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, which is illustrated in H. Ottomeyer, and P. Pröschel et al, Vergoldete Bronzen, vol. I, Munich, 1986, p. 358.
Ravrio was among the most celebrated of the fournisseurs officiels to Emperor Napoléon. He became particularly renowned for his outstanding contrast between ormolu and patinated bronze as on this chandelier.
