Titles printed in red and black, engraved additional title. Engraved portrait frontispiece, 54 engraved plates, maps and plans, 45 folding. Woodcut illustrations, headpieces and initials. (Variable light spotting and browning, some folding plates slightly creased, lacking I/*1 and A1-2, II/k5 with short tear.) Contemporary French mottled calf, covers with borders of blind single fillets, spines gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering-pieces in 2, others decorated with central floral designs enclosed by foliate sprays, red edges (lightly rubbed, minor bumping and chipping to extremities). Provenance: pencil and ink shelfmarks and notes on endpapers of vol. I.
'Tavernier spent eleven months in Constantinople before setting out on his first voyage. He joined a caravan for Persia in 1638 and made six voyages [...] to Persia, India, the east Indies and Japan [...] He was granted a patent of nobility for his contribution to the establishment of French trade in Asia; it was Tavernier who indicated the only possible trade routes to the East and made it possible for others to follow him. He kept extensive notes on the geography, commerce, natural resources, productions, moneys and customs of each country during the course of his travels' (Blackmer). The present edition, described on the title as 'revuë [et] corrigée par un des amis de l'auteur compagnon de ses voyages', is a reprint of the Ribou edition on 1713, and was edited by C. Ferrand. Cf.
