Kneller, 3 folding engraved maps, 111 engraved plates (13 folding, 54 double-page), showing 270 subjects (numbered 1-260) including views, flora and fauna, antiquities, costumes and several fine panoramas, and 44 engraved illustrations in the text. (Without half-title in vol. II, a few small wormtracks.) 18th-century mottled calf, spines gilt, edges red (corners rubbed).
First edition in French of Le Brun's copiously illustrated Voyages. Le Brun, encouraged by the success of his Voyage au Levant, began his journey to Moscow and Persia via Asia Minor in 1701. He proceeded to India, Ceylon and the East Indies, returning to Holland in 1708. Le Brun was one of the first to describe the Samoyeds and their country. The numerous illustrations include large folding panoramas of 'Moscow' and 'Spahan', views of Astrakan and Persepolis, and portraits of notable personalities. Le Brun also gives an account of his encounter with William Dampier at Batavia, and describes the route taken by Everard Ysbrants Ides, the Danish Russian ambassador to China.
