[Mexico: 1642?]. 2° (310 x 216mm). Single leaf folded, unbound, modern morocco-backed box.

A very rare Mexican printing on the Barlovento or 'Windward' Squadron which was first assembled by Spain in 1635 to combat the Dutch and British corsairs and to protect Spanish shipping, notably from the likes of Dampier, Rogers and Anson who later ravaged the ports and coasts of Spanish America and the Philippines, and the sea routes between them. This would appear to be substantially the same as Campos' account of the naval engagement of February, 1642 contained on 1 folded folio and printed the same year in Mexico. General Campos commanded the treasure-laden Nueva España Flota which was struck by a hurricane in September, 1641. A full report is given here of his five ships which were wrecked off the Florida coast with no survivors, and the other ships which sank at sea. This fleet carried the gold and silver of New Spain which had been landed at Panama by the South Seas fleet, then carried over the Isthmus to Portobello where it was transferred to the Nueva España fleet for shipment to Spain. Palau lists no account under Campos' name. Palau 258265; Medina, Mexico 564; Sabin 69208; 10325 for Campos' account.
