Lot Essay

This mask probably belonged to the town of Kurihara and has been used in an annual festival. Kurihara was a staging post on the Koshukaido, the road which wound through the mountains from Edo to Koshu and finished in Suwa, a castle town in what is now Nagano prefecture. The Koshuhkaido was one of the five old daimyo roads which all ended at Nihonbashi, in the main business quarter of Tokyo (Edo).
