A Lacquer Set for a Banquet (Jubako)
Edo-Meiji period (19th century), signed Kanko Bunryusai (Kajikawa Bunryusai II) and sealed Utsusu
Designed as a river boat with a large bowsprit and pavilion-shaped cabin holding containers for a food gathering, the set lacquered in gold, silver, red and black hiramaki-e, nashiji and gold and black togidashi with highlights of hirame, gold foil and shell inlays, all against a roiro-nuri or a fundame ground; the exterior of the hull lacquered with crashing waves; the cabin frame and roof decorated with variations of the character kotobuki (best wishes) and chrysanthemums and scrolling vines set over a three-tier stacking food box decorated on the top with two fans raised in low relief, with horses or birds in a landscape, signed Kanko Bunryusai saku and sealed Utsusu, the sides with the Seven Household Gods engaged in leisurely pursuits, a bonsai tree and a pair of boys with a crane and a bushy-tailed tortoise, below a band of formal scroll; the three-section removable deck covering a sake cask formed as a smaller boat decorated with prawns and crabs among seaweed near a fisherman's basket, the spout formed as the bow sprit; interior of boxes nashiji; silver hardware carved with scrolling vines; tiller modern replacement
