A Lacquer Picnic Set (Sage Jubako)
Edo period (19th century)
Decorated in gold, silver and black hiramaki-e and nashiji with an overall design of open and closed fans painted with floral motifs, the set comprising a four-tier quatrefoil stacking food box; a shallow serving tray set on low feet; a lobed box containing five sweet trays; a sake container modelled as a seated beauty with a puppy on her lap and offering a sake flask, her robes decorated with chrysanthemums and floral lozenge patterns lacquered in gold, red, silver, black and nashiji; the sides of the carrying case pierced with comma-shaped apertures and lacquered with a hare among grasses on an inset panel; interiors red lacquer; fitted with a cherry blossom gilt-brass handle
