Lot Essay

Zhou Honglai was among the finest of the artists who specialized in micro-engraving at the end of the Qing dynasty. He worked mostly on glass, but occasionally on porcelain. Zhou also adopted the art names Yanbin and Yanbin jushi (indicating a retired scholar). For a further discussion on the artist, see Moss, et. al, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles, vol. 5, Glass, Hong Kong, 2002, pp. 784-901, nos. 1049-56.
