HORSBURGH, James (1762-1836). Indian Atlas. London: J. & C. Walker, 1827-28. Index map and 16 folding engraved maps mounted on linen only (?of 30), hand-coloured in outline, each map 660 x 1,000mm., unbound as issued in 2 contemporary calf-backed boxes gilt (rubbed). Phillips Atlases 5301.
One of the final great surveys of the Indian Subcontinent under the British Raj, a massive and ultimately unfulfilled project which originally aimed at producing 177 maps of the entire Indian Subcontinent, Burma and the Malay peninsula (see the index map). The work was initiated under the auspices of James Horsburgh, the famous naval chartmaker, who took up the appointment of Hydrographer to the East India Company in 1810, in succession to Alexander Dalrymple. Only 30 maps, however, were ever printed, the ambitious project being abandoned in 1862.
