A rare pair of Japanese Arita blue and white bowls
LATE EDO PERIOD (1614-1868)
Painted to the rounded sides with washed-blue panels of Dutchmen reading a scroll to another and dressed in a frock-coat and broad-rimmed hat beside an elephant, the inner roundel enclosing a prancing kirin, below a blue band around the rim inscribed twice HOLLANDER, one miswritten LHOLLNDER, surmounted on a high slightly splayed foot with dentil border, crackled glaze and related rim crack
