Lot Essay

For a similar dish, see C.J.A. Jörg, Fine & Curious, Japanese Export Porcelain in Dutch Collections, Amsterdam, 2003, p. 255, pl. 329. The author points out that this is an interesting example of the Japanese blending 'exotic' elements from Dutch and Chinese sources. The Dutchman has a big nose and is dressed in Western clothing, but the brush, terrace and vegetation is Chinese.
