Lot Essay

Admiral Sir William Sidney Smith entered the Royal Navy in 1777. He enjoyed a long and active career, a highlight being his sucessful resistance to Napoleon at the siege of Acre in 1799. He was one of the few British naval officers present at the Battle of Waterloo.
