HM SLOOP TRANSFER

Manuscript 'A Journal of the Proceedings of his Majestys Sloop Transfer Thomas Bowen Esqr Commander [later Captain William Moore] Commencing the 3d of June 1797 and Ending the 31st of August 1800 Kept by Nich[ola]s W[illia]m Moullin', 70 leaves, folio, vellum boards (stained).

The log of the sloop Transfer describes her service based in Gibraltar Bay until late May 1798, when she is transferred to Naples Bay (where she brought the Hamiltons the news of Nelson's appointment to the Mediterranean fleet): the succeeding months are employed with cruising the western half of the Mediterranean, occasionally accosting suspicious vessels; on 5 September the Transfer 'Pulled in Naples Bay at ½ past 4 joined Admiral Nelson in H:M: Ship Vanguard & Squadron', and by the end of October she had returned to the Gibraltar station, cruising the Straights, including occasionally the as yet obscure 'Cape Traflagar' [sic]. The succeeding years follow a similar pattern, of stations off the River Tagus, Minorca, Naples or Sicily, with an excursion to Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean in the early months of 1800.
Special notice
No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium, which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
