HORATIO, VISCOUNT NELSON (1758-1805)

Autograph letter signed ('Nelson & Bronte') to Mr John Wilson, San Josef, 27 January 1801, one page, approximately 100 x 202mm, excised from a larger sheet, backed onto a mezzotint of Nelson on the deck of the Victory, framed in bird's eye maple and glazed, 750 x 563mm.

'HOW COULD YOU THINK I COULD NEGLECT AN OLD SHIPMATE?'. Nelson declares himself perfectly ready to provide 'a few letters of recommendation', adding that although Alexander Ball has been removed from Malta, where he would have been happpy to help, 'I trust that my name may not be neglected or slighted in the Mediterranean', and he sends a 'general letter of recommendation'.
