HORATIO, VISCOUNT NELSON (1758-1805)
Autograph letter signed ('Nelson & Bronte') to Admiral [Skeffington] Lutwidge, n.p., n.d. [c.28 February 1801], one page, 4to, integral blank leaf; wrapper with autograph address panel signed ('Nelson & Bronte'), annotated by recipient with date (worn).
Nelson excuses himself in that a combination of ill-health and a heavy swell have prevented him from paying a call in person, 'which both duty, gratitude, and inclination so much requires me to perform'; Captain Hardy however will come to receive any orders, 'I trust to your goodness in directing the flatt Boats to be sent us this night with the Carronades', together with a pilot for Yarmouth. Nelson had just been appointed second-in-command of the Baltic fleet, assembling at Yarmouth, under Sir Hyde Parker. He was off to sea again just a month after the birth of his daugher, Horatia. (2)
