Lot Essay

Another version of this needlework picture, based on an illustration in the 1794 edition of Laurence Sterne's A Sentimental Journey showing the characters of Maria and Yorick, is included in the exhibition catalogue Nelson and Napoléon, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, 2005, p.184, no. 207. This exhibited version from the Nelson-Ward collection, National Maritime Museum, is traditionally thought to have been worked by Emma.
